5/10/2023 0 Comments Tree of smoke johnsonI understand that the Colonel is the pivotal character in this book, but I've been waiting 400 pages for him to do something of sustenance, and so far have only been strung along by Johnson's fine writing and the Houston brothers side plots. There have been some gruesome scenes, but I'm not aware of any serious obstacles the characters need to overcome, nor am I seeing any any centralized plot. I understand the things I'm reading, but for a book focused on the Vietnam war, it feels so devoid of conflict. I'm about 2/3 of the way into Tree of Smoke, and I can't really say I "get" what's going on. However, I'm having a more difficult time connecting with this one. I read Train Dreams several months ago and it was my favorite book I read in 2020.
